Diabetes type 2 patients who actively control their blood sugar level themselves have a 50 percent less chance to die of their disease. They also have a 30 percent less chance of amputations and complications like blindness and heart- and kidney failure. This is the outcome of a big epidemiologic research by the German Diabetes Center in Dusseldorf. According to Stephan Martin of the center the results show that the benefit of self control and self regulation is 'incontrovertible' for people with diabetes type 2. During diabetes type 2 the body makes insulin but not enough, or the insulin cannot do its work properly anymore, because the body is insensitive to it. Insufficient glucose is taken out of the blood. As a result of this the fat metabolism and the blood pressure are usually disrupted. By checking the blood levels yourself with simple electronic measuring home devices the patient knows what is going on and he can take medicine or eat something to bring the levels back to normal again – reacting immediately. According to the German researchers knowledge about the glucose levels gives an insight into how behavior influences the course of the disease. There are a lot of people who suffer from diabetes. A lot of people from this group don't know that they have the disease. The number of patients is ever on the rise. Most of them suffer from type 2 that is catalised by being overweight. More and younger people and even children suffer from this type of the disease. |
