Knowing what to eat is confusing enough when you are healthy. There is always a new fad or a diet going on and tips about healthy eating change daily.
When you are suffering from Diabetes, it is especially important to keep to a correct diet, so your condition will not become any worse.
Here are a few tips about general healthy eating and meal planning for diabetics:
Eating vegetables is good for you. Most vegetables can taste really great if you know how to cook them. So take the time to research recipes for them. Keep your vegetables varied – eat from all colours – each colour usually stands for a vitamin or ingredient that your body needs. So a rainbow of vegetables on your plate is good for you. Non-starchy vegetables are the best.
Fruit is also healthy, but for diabetics it entails sugar like substances. So be careful with the amounts and consult your dietician and doctor about how many fruits a day you are allowed to eat.
Eat whole grain foods. Today these taste great and they are much healthier than processed wheat food. They have a lower calorie value, a better Glicemic value and are good for digestion.
Include dried beans in your meals. Include lentils in your meals.
Include fish in your meals 2-3 times a week.
Remove the skin form chicken or turkey and the fat from beef or pork. Choose muscular low fat meat such as pork lion and sirloin. Eat non-fat dairy products and yogurt.
Do not sweeten your tea and coffee. Choose water or diet drinks over normal soda.
When drinking fruit juice make sure it is 100% fruit and not sweetened.
Choose liquid oils for cooking and seasoning, avoid using solid fats that contain trans-fats. Fat affects your calorie intake and our cholesterol and triglycerides count.
Leave out sweetened snacks! Cut back on salty high calorie snacks.
Do not eat too much. Even too much healthy food is bad for you. Watch your calorie intake and exercise.
Make a meal plan and stick to it. If you work out the entire calorie and sugar calculations in advance and then just follow a plan, it is easier to keep to it as part of a daily routine. Especially for Holidays – be prepared! If you plan ahead you will be able to enjoy the holiday feasting just like everyone else.
Learn about the food you eat, its calorie values and nutritional groups and benefits. This way you can always find varied alternatives and freshen up your diet.
