My A1C was 8.2 and the doctor said, Keep up the good w
Hello everyone. I am new to this site and have a question for you. I have had my ENDOCRINOLOGIST for 14 years now. I am 29 years old, went into a coma when I was 15, (2,450 blood glucose level, (worlds record I was told)), and he saved my life. I have been with him ever since. But my A1C seems to be high now and he didn't suggest any changes. I am curious as to what you people think. To me having an average over 7.5 means that adjustments need made. What do you think?
I am also wondering if I should change doctors? He is like 74yrs old. I really hate getting an A1c over 7.2 or so. Please give me your opions. I really need them.
Thanks a lot, and have a good day.
Rich

We should strive for A1c under 6.5, the lower the better. He might be a wonderful doctor but not keeping current with new guidelines. Perhaps you can begin to look for a younger doctor.

Hello!!
Yes that is a little high...that was my highest ever and when I heard the number I nearly fell off the chair. The newest ranges:
non diabetic below 6.0%
optimal level for a diabetic 6.0-7.0%
suboptimal 7.0%-8.0%
nonoptimal 8.0% +
So there you go.....think of it this way the closer you are to non diabetic ranges the better for you body....lower is always better.
Yes your doc seems a little out of it....but could also be because the average HbA1C is something like 9.0% amoung the diabetic community so he may be used to seeing high numbers and have a bias and think your's is good.
Happy testing!

I tend to agree with Gemstone - this doc looks a bit "loose" on his requirements...

Hello Rich, I am new to this forum also. I read your question and I was wondering are you T1 or T2 Diabetic? I have only been a diabetic for 1 year(T2)and I have brought my A1C down to 5.9 from 9.8 in 6 months. I have learned to reduce my carbs in order to keep my numbers low. I take meds twice a day and watch my food intake. I also think that you should look for another doctor those numbers are still high.

Hey Rich, Sounds like your endo is more like a grandpa. 15 years is a long time, no one likes change much, but at 74 he may be on his way to retirement. See who else may be available in your area and get some different ideas to get that AIc down. Best Wishes to You!

Hi Rcih...My daughter has type 1 and her DR at MUSC says he wants her to be in the low 7's..It is hard to get Her that low because of Her age (7) we have to insure her growth height and weight so we have to feed her plenty of good carbs and then adjust the insulin ratio She takes (plus She has to have lantus also).....what a confusing and intrique game it all is isn't it! I do feel lower is better especially in the case of type 2 imho..but I am just DR. DAD lol
