In the dark!

I'm 42 and during a recent physical found out that I had sugar in my urine. I received a fasting blood sugar test and it was 317. I know absolutely nothing about diabetes and as I wait further testing I'm in the dark. This board as been very educational and I just wanted to say thanks to you all.

    In the dark!

    Thank you Karen,
I appreciate your kind words. I know that the more I learn the better I feel. My doctor called today to tell me the results of the A1C test he gave me and it was 9.9 which is high but, I still dont have many answers.I have an appointment with the doctor on Friday and I hope I can garner all the info I need. Again thank you for your support.

    Re:In the dark!

Thank you Blair. I am just trying to learn as much as possible so that I can do the right things. I have been checking my blood sugar before and after each meal and have not found a reading lower than 139 and sometimes as high as 315. I have not been eating any sugars or carbs period so I am a little confused. I know I have a lot to learn about the right kind of foods to eat so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Makomic I am sure you will find plenty of information on this forum (especially shared by Karen and Vytautas) about the right kinds of food to eat when dealing with high sugar levels.

You better wait until your Friday's appointment with your doctor though to get more clarity into your own personal situation and we look forward to seeing you back here and be part of our community after that.

    Re:In the dark!

    Hello macomic and welcome.

Sorry for being late to greet to the forums, but I've been a little busy lately. Glad to hear that this forum was educational, but no matter what you've found I suggest sticking to the forums, because there are all sorts of news popping up now and then. It just takes time.

I agree with Blair on waiting for the appointment with the doctor and taking in any info he can give you. Then you will know better what you need to find out. All in all Diabetes is something you can live with normally. As I wrote on a poster (to be placed in the hospital where we set "fresh" diabetics to live on): "Life with diabetes is the same life as any one elses, you just have a few more habits".

Good luck and waiting to hear more.

Post edited by: Vytautas, at: 2008/08/27 17:46

Vytautas that poster sounds very good. Do you, perhaps, have a copy of it online?

    Re:In the dark!

    Hi again!

Makomic, just wanted to wish you luck tomorrow... make sure to write down any questions you may have for you doctor in advance, so you don't forget anything (like me, LOL) I'd also recommend getting an appointment with a nutritionist, if you can, so that you can easily plan meals and snacks. (I find that having a protein with 15g of carbs before bed has me waking up with great numbers, and feeling great too!)

Like Vytautas mentioned, Diabetes is something you can live with normally. It's a lifestyle adjustment. But with proper medical care, moderate exercise and healthy eating habits you CAN manage it and live life to the fullest!

PS. Blair, Vytautas... you guys should post that poster up, smaller, on the site somewhere!

    Re:In the dark!

I am thinking of writing a short article with the logo and the short story on the other side. It's not really good quality since I did it with my camera (not yet on the web).

Post edited by: Vytautas, at: 2008/08/30 22:41
