On 17th, I contact his hospital TELEPHONICALLY & inquired about the availability of the treatment to Diabetics; especially about my 16 yr Juvenile Diabetic only Son*. A lady named Nalinibahen, replied on his behalf over the telephone that I may go to there in Ahmedabad during any Monday to Friday with prior appoint. On inquiry, She got confirmation that blood group of my son & of mine is equal. She told me about the procedure that on arrival, they, through minor surgery, collect a piece of fat from my stomack & let us leave the hospital for about 15 days. During these period, they will cultivate stem cells from it. When stem cells r ready from the fat, they will call us for treatment of my Juvenile/Type 1 Diabetic Son. She informed me over TELEPHONE that they will transplant the stem cell into lever of the patient. After that, the patient has to let admitted for about 1 month. On inquiry, she told me their charges, Rs. 1 Lac.

WHAT DO U THINK ABOUT THIS NEWS WHEN SUCH TYPE OF RESEARCES ARE CONTINEOUSLY GOING ON ALL OVER GLOBE ?

Hi prakashthakrar, welcome to the forum

I think it's wonderful that research go on and on and progress further everytime. However, I have serious doubt about contracting test patients in this way. A clinical research should be held in a restricted circle of patients signing the document that they know the implications a certain study can bring about.

DEAR FRIENDS,

AFTER EXACT ONE YEAR OF MY MESSAGE TO DIABETICS, I HAVE TO REVIEW MY OWN MESSAGE TO DIABETICS.

THIS ONE YEAR EXPERIENCE OBTAINED WHILE CONSTANT TOUCH WITH PATIENTS TREATED BY THE HONOURABLE TEAM COMPELLED ME TO LET YOU ALL KNOW THE HIGH ALERT AREA WHEN IT COMES TO THE TREATMENT OF HUMAN BEINGS. WHILE POSTING THIS MESSAGE IN THE VAST INTEREST OF DIABETICS, I MUST CLARIFY THAT THESE ARE MY PERSONAL OPINION AND I AM WRITING THIS IN THE CAPACITY OF A FATHER OF A JUVENILE DIABETIC AND NOT AS AN EXPERT :-

A) THEY CREATE STEM CELLS FROM FAT CELLS OF PARENTS OF THE PATIENT THAT ARE TRANSPLANTED TO THE PATIENT. THIS MEANS THAT THE CELLS WILL HAVE IMMUNE SIGNATURE OF PARENTS OF THE PATIENT. THEREFORE THE CELLS ARE TREATED AS FOREIGN CELLS WHICH ARE ATTACKED BY IMMUNE SYSTEM OF THE PATIENT. THIS IMMUNE RESPONSE COULD BE SUPPRESSED OF COURSE BUT IT HAS SOME DANGERS TOO. MAY BE THESE DANGERS ARE GREATER THAN BEING TREATED BY INSULIN TREATMENT VIA INSULIN PUMP OR PEN.

B) THE LONG TERM EFFECTS OF STEM CELL TREATMENT ARE UNKNOWN. IT IS
POSSIBLE THAT THE CELLS RESULTING FROM THE PROCEDURE ARE NOT AS
HEALTHY AS IT SEEMS. THIS IS DUE TO THE MASSIVE CHANGES THAT ARE
NECESSARY TO CREATE STEM CELLS FROM ADULT CELLS. SINCE THESE CELLS
REPRODUCE THEMSELVES THERE IS A POTENTIAL RISK OF CANCER DEVELOPMENT.

I WOULD PROJECT THAT AT LEAST 10 YEARS OF INTENSIVE RESEARCH ARE NECESSARY TO EVALUATE THE SIDE EFFECTS. THIS IS MY PERSONAL OPINION; OF COURSE.

ONE MAY GO THROUGH THE CONTACT DETAILS OF IKDRC PATIENTS WHOSE TRANSPLANTED INSULIN-MAKING STEM CELLS AND ASK ABOUT THE PAST AND RECENT INSULIN DOSES :-

Odd that I didn't see this post when I joined... We have heard of such a procedure, but it wasn't used here because of the sceptical views of many doctors. They insisted on waiting untill further study has been made. Thank you for the information.
