    Saddly another newie

Hi my name is Debbie we just found out 2 weeks ago that my 8 year old daughter has type 1 diabetes..The first week really put us in a spin I hardly remember the first 2 days in the hosp afterwards things started to fall into place. I guess you have to accept this and do what you have to do for your child, truthfuly she has made this easy on us I have been so blessed with the way she is.. Right now she is on 4 shots a day 3 of Novolog and one on Lantus, they say maybe in 6 months she can get the pump. From what I have seen and heard this should make things even easier for her.. Here at home we are doing fine but her school is a totally different story:angry: I was up there 2 times a day all last week this week I am going everyday just to train them I found out over the weekend how to draw p my own 504 plan so today I will be armed and ready for them:P

    Hi Lotsoftots,
    Welcome to the forum!
Sorry to hear about the diagnosis, it's always scary when a child is sick. The good news is that the disease IS manageable. In fact, I'll be brief, but I wanted to tell you that I have a friend that has a daughter who was diagnosed when she was 7 years old, and she's doing really, really well. In fact, last year she went on the pump (she's been on it for about 8 months or so) and she can actually work it better than her parents, LOL! There's nothing that she doesn't do -- she's absolutely like every other kid when it comes to playing etc. and they find the pump is much easier (especially with school). The key is to make sure she gets her snacks, always has something packed for an emergency if she goes somewhere, and that her parents check her blood sugar levels throughout the day and in the evening.
Anyhow, good thinking getting armed and ready for the school... and good luck! Keep us posted on your progress!

Lotsoftots, welcome to the forum I'm sorry to hear about the diagnoses of your daughter, but, as Karen says, it's a managable disease - Nowadays it has already come far, and the future looks even more promising as medical science is always improving and progressing.
