There is a lot of researches about islet cells. They are for Type 1 diabetes and very promising. Since Type 2 are insulin resistant but the pancreas still produce some insulin, having more islet cells would not cure it. Most researches are for Type 1. For type 2, I've yet to see a research for something else than new medications, new testers and equipments... a cure? I don't believe.

Re: Pig cells could provide diabetes cure - 2008/01/23 18:47 I am pretty sceptical about this but optimistic (as in willing that it works). For one thing monkeys, no matter how similar to humans, are still diferent beings and that might not work on humans as their cell structure may be a bit more diferent to the donor cells than monkeys'. Secondly the nature of the speciments' diabetes is not stated: if it is autonomic (it appeared for the same reasons as to any other of us) then the reaserch is of quite some use, then again if it was caused deliberately then there are many more variables that need to be concidered: what if our organism starts atacking the new cells?

All in all there is little hope here, but still there is some.

As for Type I vs Type II it's just that Type I is a bigger priority since there is a 0% of diabetics that have been cured from T1, whereas T2 sometimes get's cured.

Re: Pig cells could provide diabetes cure - 2008/01/25 12:59 I agree with you Vytautas, it is good to test all and everything but hopes shouldn't be raised too much. It may take many, many years before a 'wonder' medicine is being discovered (and, on the other hand, it might be tomorrow as well )
